An EV drive unit is a deceptive vibration source. Without combustion pulses, it seems calm — yet its motor whine spans kilohertz and its reduction gear adds torque ripple that never pauses across 200,000 km.
Bottom line: for most Anti-Loosening Series applications the decision comes down to load, environment and assembly method — the Anti-Loosening Series guide walks through the selection.
ICE-era fastening specs assumed low-frequency, high-amplitude excitation. E-drives deliver high-frequency, low-amplitude input — exactly the regime where micro-slip ratchets preload down silently. Joints that passed an engine dynamometer schedule can fail a power spectral density profile tuned to a 12,000 rpm motor.
Ask suppliers for vibration data at frequencies above 500 Hz, and combine thermal-shock with vibration testing — the combination, not either alone, predicts field life. Topprecision supports EV tier-1s with insert and screw kits validated against OEM PSD schedules, plus PPAP-grade documentation.
| Method | Preload retained after 1000 cycles | Reusable | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain nut (no lock) | <5% | Yes | Low |
| Spring lock washer | <3% (worse than plain) | Yes | Low |
| Nylon insert nut (NYLOC) | ~40% | Limited (5x) | Medium |
| All-metal prevailing torque | ~55% | Yes | Medium |
| Wedge lock washer (Nord-Lock) | ~85% | Yes | High |
| Pre-applied thread locker | >95% | Limited | Medium |
Toprecision supplies prevailing-torque lock nuts, nylon-insert nuts, wedge lock washers and pre-applied thread-locking patches for EV powertrains, rail and vibrating machinery. Send the vibration frequency and clamp load requirement — we will recommend the locking method and supply Junker test data. Request anti-loosening consult.
EV motors vibrate at 800–1200 Hz from the rotor magnetic field, plus road input at 5–50 Hz. Bolted joints in the motor housing must survive both. Use prevailing-torque nuts or thread-locking adhesive rated for 150 °C. Torque-to-yield bolts are preferred because they provide more consistent preload than torque-only tightening on aluminum housings.
