Blind Rivet Nuts for Thin Sheets: One-Side Installation, Anti-Rotation and Galvanic Protection

SourceToprecisionEditorToprecisionP26-10-12 22:00

NEV bodies, eVTOL airframes, AI server chassis and humanoid robot frames are built from thin sheet, aluminum extrusions, magnesium die-castings and engineering plastics — materials too thin to tap a reliable thread. Welding a nut warps the sheet and ruins the coating; a self-clinching nut needs an open backside. The blind rivet nut solves this from one side only.

The short answer: a blind rivet nut is set in about 3 seconds from one accessible side. The pulling tool stretches the unthreaded body until it collapses into a bulb on the backside, clamping the sheet between the head and the bulb. It builds a permanent, load-bearing internal thread without heat, distortion or backside access.

The four body shapes and their anti-rotation geometry

In vibration and high alternating load (battery packs, drone airframes), a rivet nut fails two ways: it spins in the hole when the bolt is turned, or it pulls out axially. The body geometry is how Toprecision locks both failure modes:

Body shape Anti-rotation mechanism Typical use
Flat-head knurledLongitudinal knurling bites the hole wall on settingConsumer electronics enclosures, sheet-metal chassis, appliances
Semi/full hexagonalHex hole in the sheet converts friction to mechanical lockNEV电控 enclosures, body structural parts
Inside & outside hexMax external rigidity + high internal torque capacityHeavy structures, aerospace, heavy smart equipment
Closed end (blind hole)Sealed tail blocks gas/liquid path; seal ring reaches IP67/IP68Outdoor storage cabinets, liquid-cooled server racks, battery packs

The light-alloy problem: galvanic corrosion

A steel rivet nut in an aluminum or magnesium sheet is a galvanic cell waiting for moisture. Steel sits at a higher electrode potential than aluminum (-0.76 V) and magnesium (-2.37 V). In a wet, salt-spray environment (underbody, outdoor drone flight), the light alloy acts as the anode and corrodes sacrificially — the joint loosens or separates.

Toprecision's answer is material and coating, not hope:

  • 304 stainless steel rivet nuts for NEV — passivated stainless holds a small, safe potential gap with aluminum, suppressing galvanic attack at the source.
  • Isolating coatings where high-strength steel is required — a nano-scale insulating barrier between the nut and the light-alloy sheet, surviving GB/T salt spray without failure.
  • Controlled setting force — aluminum and magnesium are less ductile than steel; an over-powerful pull cracks the hole edge. Tool travel and pull force must be tuned to the sheet alloy and thickness.

The 15/85 total-cost view

The rivet nut itself is ~15% of the joint cost. The other 85% is design selection, incoming inspection, line setting, field warranty and recall. A few yuan saved on a cheaper nut is wiped out the first time a setting slip scraps a whole panel, or a corroded joint triggers a field recall. Bringing the fastener supplier into the prototype stage (EVI) — with IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 quality systems — is where the 85% actually comes out.

Toprecision manufactures blind rivet nuts in knurled, hex, inside/outside hex and closed-end forms, in steel, stainless 304 and aluminum, with riveting series product line.
