Plastic enclosures assembled after electronics build need metal threads for screws. The conventional route is ultrasonic or heat-staking after molding; the newer route is placing inserts in reflow alongside everything else.
Bottom line: for most SMT Fasteners applications the decision comes down to load, environment and assembly method — the SMT Fasteners guide walks through the selection.
Board-mounted versions solder onto SMT pads and present a metal thread to the enclosure screws — ideal when the PCB itself is the structural deck, as in camera modules and sensor stacks. Housing-mounted versions have solder pins that enter molded-in holes; reflow heat of the subsequent board assembly reflows the joint, or a dedicated oven step anchors them.
Any line that currently pauses automation for a staking operation. Topprecision supplies SMT inserts on tape-and-reel with land-pattern files, and will joint-review your mold drawings to align pin positions with existing pad real estate.
| Insert type | Thread material | Best for | Temperature limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard free-running | 304 stainless | General aluminum/ magnesium housings | ~300°C |
| Screw-locking (prevailing torque) | 304 stainless | Vibration-prone joints | ~300°C |
| Inconel X-750 | Inconel | Aerospace, engine hot zones | ~750°C |
| Keensert (solid bushing) | Steel/zinc-plated | Repeated assembly, heavy load | ~400°C |
Toprecision manufactures precision fasteners in-house — send the drawing, service environment and annual volume. We will recommend the material, grade, coating and process that match the joint requirement. Request a fastener consult.
Surface-mount threaded inserts need placement height tolerance of ±0.05 mm. If the insert sits too high, the pick-and-place nozzle crashes; too low and the solder fillet does not form. Work with your stencil supplier to set the correct solder paste volume — too much paste creates solder balls, too little causes open joints. Toprecision provides sample reels for SMT line testing before production.
