Engineering Plastic Fasteners: When PEEK and Nylon Beat Metal on Purpose

SourceToprecisionEditorToprecisionPublished2026-08-09 09:30

The fastest way to misuse a plastic screw is to treat it as a budget metal screw. Plastic fasteners win where their specific properties — not price — solve the problem.

Bottom line: for most Thread Inserts applications the decision comes down to load, environment and assembly method — the Thread Inserts guide walks through the selection.

Four winning scenarios

  • Galvanic neutrality: joining carbon-fiber panels or aluminum to CFRP without galvanic couples — nylon and PEEK are inert referees.
  • Insulation: high-voltage assemblies and RF enclosures need non-conductive clamping.
  • Chemical resistance: PEEK survives environments that destroy every metal plating.
  • Weight and transparency-critical zones: fixtures, optics and low-load structural closures.

Design with the material's nature

Plastic creeps: preload decays within hours, so joints must tolerate relaxation (spring elements, wide flanges, low torque). Thread engagement is generous — 2.5–3D minimum. Temperature ceilings are hard: nylon 6/6 to ~120 °C, PPS to ~200 °C, PEEK to ~250 °C.

Thread-forming vs thread-cutting

Thread-forming screws for plastic compress material for superior retention and no chips — the default for thermoplastics. Topprecision manufactures both metal and engineering-plastic fastener lines, helping customers pick per joint rather than per habit.

Need help selecting the right fastener material?

Toprecision cold-heads and CNC-turns fasteners in steel (4.6–12.9), stainless 304/316/410, aluminum 6061/7075, titanium Grade 5 and engineering plastics. Send the service environment and load requirement — we will recommend the material and grade with tensile test data. Request material selection support.
